Wide Awake. That’s the name of the movie I watched the other night. I hadn’t heard much about it, but saw a preview a couple years ago and remember thinking it would be good. When I popped in the videocassette (no DVD available at Family Video), I was surprised to see the director/writer as none other than M. Night Shyamalanabingbang. (Sorry, I can never say or spell his name.) Anyway… it was an awesome little film! It starred this little boy – a fifth grader named Joshua who was struggling with the death of his grandfather – his best friend. He goes on a search to find God – desperately hoping for God to speak to him. This film is his narrative – his story of his search, as only a 5th grade catholic school boy can. One of the hardest things about this movie was watching all the people he encountered, including his parents, who had no real answers for him about how God speaks. But, at the same time, it’s definitely one I would recommend because the ending resolution is brilliant. “This wonder-filled film proves that questions can be powerful allies on a spiritual journey. It also demonstrates how attention, listening, and love are expressions of the sacred in everyday life. “I spent this year looking for something,” Joshua observes, “and ended up seeing everything around me. It’s like I was asleep. I’m wide awake now.” — Spirituality & Practice
It again reminded me of how God reveals Himself, through encounters with people, with nature, with the world arounds us. As we interact and connect through our daily lives, we (I) need to be aware that God is constantly speaking and moving. There are no coincidences… only divine encounters.
Hey Joshua… That sounds like an awesome movie! I want to see it! Is it a documentary? Did you change your site? It looks different. Maybe it’s my computer… it does weird things sometimes. Anyway, hope all is well. Later Gator! ~Bets
