What is it with showers?

Posted on Saturday 23 November 2002 by Joshua

What is it with showers? People are so funny about showers. Whenever you go to someone’s house to spend the night, one of the things they always have to show you is how to work the shower. And believe me, most times that is an important thing. For example, the shower in my house is one of the most bizarre contraptions I have yet encountered. Thankfully the landlord explained it to me or I would still be taking baths. Basically, you turn on the water and then there is this little ring underneath the faucet that you have to pull down and hold until the pressure gets up to the shower head; then you can let it go. It is so weird. In my previous house, the shower had a stem in the middle of the water faucet which you had to pull up. And I have been to some houses where I have honestly searched everywhere [in vain] to try and turn the shower on. Then have to sheepishly ask the host… “ummm how do you turn your shower on? I’m a moron and can’t figure it out.” But my favorite are the ones where you have hot handle on the left, cold handle on the right, and shower handle in the middle. That is just so common sense.

It just cracks me up that there isn’t really some kind of a universal shower code. It seems that all these companies just do their own thing. Everyone knows how a sink faucet works. Almost every single toilet always has the flush handle in the same place. So why does a shower have to be such a complex thing? The worst part of it is that usually when you encounter this perplexing conundrum, it is early in the morning before your higher brain functions have kicked in. You are in a cold room (bathrooms are always cold to me), naked, half asleep, and all you want is hot water to wake you up.
