Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day.

Posted on Saturday 16 March 2002 by Joshua

Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day. Just sitting here watching the St. Patrick’s day parade in Chicago. I really need to remember to go to that next year. I completely forgot about it! It is cool to see the celebration of our roots. The music, the excitement, the dance, the wearing of the green. Speaking of which… Did you ever wonder why people wear green on St. Paddy’s day? Here are a couple interesting facts about it. I found this here.

PATRICK: St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland because he is credited with converting Ireland to Christianity in the 5th Century AD.

SHAMROCK: St Paddy is said to have selected the Shamrock (3-leaved clover) as the concept of the Holy Trinity, three Persons in One.

GREEN: Chosen for the shamrock, and to represent Ireland, the “Emerald Isle”, and its beautiful green countryside. The green landscape is the result of underlying limestone and frequent rains and mists.

LEPRECHAUN: An Irish fairy. Looks like a small, 2′ tall, old man dressed like a shoemaker, with a cocked hat and a leather apron. According to legend, leprechauns spend their spare time making shoes, are aloof and unfriendly, live alone, and possess a hidden pot of gold.

BLARNEY STONE: A stone set in the wall of the Blarney Castle tower in the Irish village of Blarney. . Kissing the stone is supposed to bring the kisser the gift of persuasive eloquence, ie: the gift of gab, aka ‘blarney’. The castle was built in 1446, and thousands of tourists still visit the castle annually.

It ‘s difficult to choose between two blind goats.

Here are some more fascinating and humorous irish proverbs.

Anyway. Enjoy the day! Wear some green and have a Guinness. Erin Go Braugh!
