This old Bruce Hornsby song

Posted on Wednesday 6 March 2002 by Joshua

This old Bruce Hornsby song makes me think of our cultures’ fondness for saying “that’s just how it is, I can’t do anything about that” even when everything inside of us screams that it should not be so. I think of people like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther. She stood for racial equality and said, I will not be treated as a second class citizen. I will be heard. Luther said, I just got a revelation from God about what faith is and I cant agree with what you [The established Church] says any more. Here are 95 reasons why. And these people forever changed their world.

Whats my point? I guess I am saying … when you know you are right about something, don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo. Don’t turn a blind eye to someone else’s pain or merely accept what people say when you know it is wrong. Be someone who moves and shakes the world. Remember that we have Christ in us – the ultimate world shaker. His words … His message can and will change the world.

Standing in line, marking time Waiting for the welfare dime ‘Cause they can’t find a job The man in the silk suit hurries by As he catches the poor old ladies’ eyes Just for fun he says: “Get a job” That’s just the way it is Some things will never change That’s just the way it is Ah, but don’t you believe them They said: “Hey little boy, you can’t go where the others go ‘Cause you don’t look like they do” They said: “Hey old man, how can you stand to think that way Did you really think about it before you made the rules” He said: Son That’s just the way it is Some things will never change That’s just the way it is Ah, but don’t you believe them Well, they passed a law in ’64 To give those who ain’t got a little more But it only goes so far ‘Cause the law don’t change another’s mind When all it sees at the hiring time Is the line on the color bar? That’s just the way it is Some things will never change That’s just the way it is That’s just the way it is…
