I first met Dave Carey in the late 90s at Grace College. He was the roommate of another David, the very one who introduced me to the art of good coffee. So anyway, Dave was a bit of a mystery to me when I first met him. He was dark and emotional, but an incredibly talented artist. He would spend hours and hours drawing these amazing sketches in his journals. Since I often frequented his room in the dorm (getting my nightly fix of cappuccino) I came to know him better during the year and we became friends. Eventually, he moved into my house during the summers and even worked in my office as a design intern. We had many adventures – driving across the country to Arizona, New York, and places in between. There were many discussions, arguments, encouragements, lessons (he even tried to teach me to play tennis!) and all those things that go along with the journey of friendship.
It was my privilege to stand with Dave at his wedding as he married Liz, and has been an honor to continue to share in his life. We talk design, God, and all things in between. But I think what is awesome is the journey with Jesus that has changed him so radically over the past almost 15 years that I have known him. The Lord brought him from where he was – on a path that was leading anywhere but toward the things of the Lord – to a man who is so passionate about holiness, a man who serves the Lord, a man who serves others, a man of honor and character, a man who loves his wife, a man who runs his business on principles that glorify God and exemplify sowing into the kingdom, a man who uses his talents in music to worship God, and a man who seeks to know Jesus with his whole heart.
So today Dave is 35. I pray that the Lord would bless him indeed! I pray that his life would continue to affect others in positive ways, and that as he sows, his blessing would increase. I pray that the love he has for Liz would grow deeper and stronger. Above all, I pray that he would continue to seek after God with all his heart, mind and strength.
Dave, it is a privilege to be your friend.
We are drawn into stories with others, aren’t we? Sometimes all it takes is a cup of cappuccino. Or a blog posting, in this case. But may our stories always continue on with blessings. Bless you, too, Joshua — as the pages keep turning for you.
