Posted on Tuesday 3 September 2002 by Joshua

The tongue is truly a powerful weapon. As a friend of mine wrote yesterday, “words have so much more power than i think i have ever realized before … words can hurt so deeply…deeper than imaginable … there are things that were said to me when i was a child that i still can’t get over. i know that those words were not right or true or just…yet i just can’t let go of them…they are a part of me now and for always. one hurtful word can scar someone’s emotions for a lifetime…”

Isn’t that crazy how the stuff that people said to us when we were kids still come back and haunt us? I think it is because we were so much more innocent and impressionable when they were said to us. “You are fat, you are ugly, you suck at [insert here], you are stupid, you are worthless…” Words have tremendous power. The old saying “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” is the biggest lie. I would rather deal with a broken arm than the emotional scars of words said in anger and hatred.

HOWEVER… there is definitely hope. Those things that people tell us “you’re stupid,” etc. are lies. And we have truth available to us. Jesus Christ is truth. He is able to come into our lives and replace those lies in our memories with truth and the coolest thing is that you do not have to deal with the pain of those lies any more! He specializes in healing and it is immediate and thorough. They don’t have to be something that you deal with every day any longer. Isn’t that amazing? Sound unbelieveable? It’s not, I can assure you! Jesus the bringer of hope to the hopeless and the healer of the wounded.

The best thing though, is that words can be the most powerful encouragement tool. You can make someone’s day and lift them up in a great way with a simple smile and a compliment. After all… isn’t that the point of being brothers and sisters to edify and make things a little better for those around us?
