This afternoon was a great time of discussion with my good friend David Ramer. At the outset was a question about if/how a person could be a Christian and demonically oppressed (not possessed)which led us into the discussion of the role of the spirit and soul of a man. Essentially, he was saying that the spirit is that part of us that is cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ when we accept the free gift of salvation. It is where the fruit of the Spirit occurs; it is where you would say God dwells. The soul is the mind or the will of a man. It is that area that has free will to choose to sin, despite the reality of Jesus living in us. What is referred to as the flesh is that area between the soul and the body – because obviously the body is just an earthsuit — it does what the mind tells it. If influenced by the spirit, it is going to do things that honor God; if controlled by fleshly desires, then obviously, it sinks into hedonism. This is why the reality of these scriptures — Romans 12:1-2, I John 1:9, James 4:7, Romans 6, and James 5:16 are so critical. I John 1:9 is not a way to live in some sort of false grace — well I can just confess it and not worry about it, but it is an essential part of waging war on your sin. Good talks and I love the opportunity to continue to spur each other on in our Christian walks.
True, true. Always good to get these areas understood so we know how to wage our warfare effectively.
love this! i want that on my desk now
