The Fortress of Faith and Fine Cars

Posted on Friday 11 April 2008 by Joshua

Since we are in South Carolina, I thought it would be really cool to go and visit Bob Jones University, where I attended from 1991-1993. It was really wild going back on campus. Alot has changed in 15 years. New buildings have been constructed (including an über cool little coffeeshop) and many improvements have been made (especially to the front campus). Gone is the ugly 50s guard house at the entrance and in it’s place is a beautiful new entry with stately wrought iron fencing and sweeping curved drives. The fountain area was also redone and it is really beautiful. We walked all over campus – it was just as beautiful as I remembered. Pink magnolias and flowering dogwoods everywhere, flowers brightly blooming, grass thick and green and the scent of spring was in the air. We even watched the multi-media promotional short about the school and Liz wanted to sign up right away. Ok, maybe not. I am sure that to the students there we made a bit of an odd looking group since we were not dressed to the BJU code – Liz was wearing jeans, Dave had on shorts, Robert’s hair is long and I have an earring. Anyway, it was funny to see a few looks from the pressed khaki and oxford-wearing students. One of the highlights was being stopped by Campus Safety and asked for our IDs. I guess he thought we were members of the press because Dave and I had on these huge camera bags and we were taking photos – mainly of each other and the landscaping, but since they have had so many groups protesting and causing trouble, I can see why they were suspicious. At any rate, it really was a nice time and we concluded the afternoon with a visit to the Art Gallery.

After leaving the gallery, we ventured north and stopped at the BMW-Zentrum museum. It is the only BMW museum in North America, conveniently located next to the only BMW plant in North America. There were some very sweet cars in there that caused Robert to drool and Liz to decide to go sleep in the car. In any event, we were back home in time for some speed Scrabble action and a viewing of Nacho Libre.

Bob Jones was quite the trip! I was having a hard time imagining Josh attending school there, but everything is for a reason…
Despite the “looks” it was a great day and a really great week!
