Let me tell you a story…
Once, not too long ago, I was irresponsible with money. I thought that it was mine. After all, I “earned it!” So I paid my bills and tried to keep my head above water and, occasionally, if there was some money at the end of the check, I would give some to the church. I was drowning in debt and hated my financial life. I had nothing to show for all my hard work – no savings – just a pile of debt and a bunch of payments every month. But God… My goodness, those are powerful words. But God, with a mighty hand, delivered me. He showed me a better way. He showed me that it was never mine to begin with, and if I would be faithful in just bringing back a small portion of what was already His, I could keep the rest. And, on top of that, He would bless me with even more! You could say that I found the cure for the fatal financial disease in my life and it is actually really simple.
Before I do anything else after I cash my check, I bring the first part of the money – it’s the very first thing I do – the first fruits – into the House of the Lord. That’s it. It is an established principle, a command, something that is expected by God. But the rewards of doing it are amazing!
Because God, with a mighty hand delivered me… therefore, I gladly give the first fruits of all I get! Everything I have is already from Him, so it is a JOY to return the portion He has asked me for: the tithe – the tenth. And guess what? Since I have chosen to do this, my life – especially my financial life – has radically changed and is continuing to change. And it is awesome. The Lord is good!
We are doing the Financial Peace University and its amazing! God is doing some great works in and through our faithfulness. One day we will be debt free!!! 🙂
Darci – I am so excited for you guys! If you are diligent and you live crazy now… it will come much faster than you think! How awesome!
You have a wonderful testimony Joshua! I still remember that day after church, in the 1st apartment Dave and I lived in. We sat down, grabbed a piece of yellow notebook paper and wrote down all your bills, etc… I think we found that paper not too long ago. I wonder where it is.
I would also highly recommend Jim Sammons’ Financial Freedom DVD series. It’s SO GOOD! You can check it out at http://www.iblp.org under Products.
