Pshaw

Posted on Wednesday 9 February 2005 by Joshua

Pshaw! As I wrote this word tonight on my sister’s blog, I stated laughing because I honestly have no idea what this word means. Just spelling it makes me laugh. It is just such an “old people arguing” type of a word. “Mable, I tell you what, that milk is 5 days past spoiled old if it’s a day.” “Pshaw, Horace! You can’t even see with your glasses on your head.” “Well, I sure as shootin’ know what I can taste!”

So for all you interested in the origins of the word “pshaw,” here is what I found at takeourword.com.

“Pshaw, pronounced “p’shaw” or “puhshaw” or even “shaw”, is an exclamation of impatience or disgust. It is said to be imitative of the sound one makes when impatient or disgusted – a sharp exhalation and sigh combined into one. It dates all the way back, in writing, to 1673.”

Huh. I didn’t think that had any relevance in the 1600s. What the heck would they write that back there for?
