Walking around the land of the Irish this evening and everywhere I look, I see green shirts, green beads, green hats emblazoned with shamrocks or the word “IRISH”, a few brave fools wearing green shorts in the 20 degree chill, and some wise, green coat-clad ladies carrying steaming cups branded with a familiar green logo. Green. The color of life. The color of growth. And after such a long winter, I am definitely ready to see green.
I stopped by one of my favorite Irish places for my favorite Irish drink — Caramel Hot Chocolate with cinnamon. Everyone who is even partly Irish should try this amazing drink. Since I am half Irish, I drink it frequently. And what a great name for a Irish Pub. I gotta say, everytime I see it I laugh.
Interestingly enough, “Aside from the color green, the activity most associated with St. Patrick’s Day is drinking. However, Irish law, from 1903 to 1970, declared St. Patrick’s Day a religious observance for the entire country meaning that all pubs were shut down for the day. That meant no beer, not even the green kind, for public celebrants. The law was overturned in 1970, when St. Patrick’s was reclassified as a national holiday – allowing the taps to flow freely once again.” See. That’s why I drink hot chocolate. I never have to worry about such things.
Anyway, here it is, the day we celebrate life by wearing green. At least that’s what I think about on this day. And the prayer of St. Patrick – God be in me, over me, around me, beside me, be in my speech and actions … encompass my being, Lord. (That’s my paraphrase).
Green day – speak and act life. Be a testimony of His greatness to those around you.
Fun fact: Apparently someone figured it out and the odds of finding a four-leaf clover are about 1 in 10,000.
