Of Doors, Halls, Stairs and a Couch

Posted on Wednesday 29 January 2020Wednesday 29 January 2020 by Joshua

Let me tell y’all a little story. My friends Zach Ferreira and Nicole Marie Ferreira live in an upstairs apartment. They recent bought a couch to replace their old one. Zach told me of the struggle to get the old one out, but me, being one who has moved a great amount of things in crazy situations, said, “C’mon, Dude… how hard can it be? Seriously.” So we loaded the couch on the trailer and off we went to their place.

Firstly – You have to walk up a outside stairwell with tall railings on it and you come to a small deck about 8′ off the ground. This was nice as we set the couch on said railings while we prudently removed the 3″ legs. (So so glad we did this!)

Secondly – The exterior door opens in to a narrow stairwell going up another 8-9 steps. There is a doorway at the top of this and a short hallway with three doors. One to the third floor, one to the apartment and another one that randomly opens into the apartment. It took several attempts to get the couch up to this hallway. Turning it multiple ways. It finally was at the top, standing almost on end. (Low ceilings also).

Thirdly – We opened and closed doors, twisted and turned and maneuvered up and down, back and forth. There was lots of concern about putting holes in drywall (Zach) and ripping the fabric of the couch (Joshua). At long last, we got the couch into the second hallway, which was just slightly wider than the first one. The doorway to the living room was slightly off from the entry door, which certainly did not help matters. So we took the entry door off the hinges to give us more space. There were also these large crown moulding type details over each door which stuck out and made us unable to get the couch standing up in the air as we were hoping.

Fourthly – We finally got this thing sitting flat in the midst of the hallway. If ever Ross Gellar was needed, it was for this move, although any yelling of pivot would have been smacked down immediately as we were both sweating and tired at this point. Although I was saying that “In Jesus’ name this couch is going in that room.” Zach’s idea was to take it toward the kitchen and standing back up over there and turn it around which worked well. Again we were met with the crown moulding issues and were stuck. And also the coat rack, which I then unscrewed from the wall (after putting a tiny hole in the drywall). We put the couch back down and I said,”That’s enough.” I noted the moulding would come off after a quick inspection, so I carefully pulled off the top moulding with a pry bar and and voila! We stood up couch quick as a flash. Sorta. We we not moving fast at this point.

Fifthly – After some more careful turning and maneuvering, TWO HOURS later, we successfully moved the couch into the living room whereupon Zach promptly collapsed after many praises to the Lord.

Sixthly – The coat rack and moulding was returned to their rightful places, Judah was allowed to come out and see this wonderful new thing in the living room, and Nicole marveled at its comfort.

Seventhly – As I drove home, I felt a certain amount of satisfaction in having bested that insane narrow double hallways of doors and low ceilings and getting that couch in.

Eighthly – If you guys move, I will be unavailable for assistance unless I am allowed to use a Sawzall.

Ninthly – I have posted a diagram to help you understand this convoluted tale.
