Observations

Posted on Sunday 24 August 2003 by Joshua

Observations while driving back and forth to NY:

1. What is up with people who deliberately try to hit you?
I stop at a stop sign, see someone down the road, but know full well i have plenty of time, so I proceed to move forward. Suddenly, I notice them accelerating directly at me as if to ram me. Do these people really want to risk injury to themselves, their passengers, or another person (namely me)? This confuses me. My reaction when I see someone pulling out down the road is to slow down slightly so as to ensure a smooth transition with the vehicle entering the highway.

2. People who drive slow in the passing lane. Why?
I have never figured these people out. Do they like driving over there? Are they left handed or perhaps from the UK? The primary purpose for the passing lane is … TO PASS OTHER SLOWER MOVING VEHICLES.

3. Those fine folks who fail to understand the purpose of a turn signal lever.
Some people just don’t get that it makes life much easier for other drivers when they signal their intentions via the use of the mechanism included in every vehicle on the road… the turn signal, or “blinker.” Even the Amish have them on their buggies. Get a clue folks.

4. People who don’t turn their lights on at dusk or during bad weather.
The best is when they turn their parking lights on, as if that will help you see them in the grey weather. Maybe it is because I wear glasses and don’t see the best, but it certainly makes life much nicer when people turn their lights on when it rains. Personally, I think every car should be wired so that when the wipers come on, the lights automatically turn on.

5. What’s up with people who don’t pay attention at intersections and rear end other people?
Oh wait, that would be me. What a dork.

6. Unexplainable lines of slow moving traffic on the highway.
That is the weirdest phenomena. You are driving at 75 mph, and suddenly find yourself standing still in a 30 minute line, and then when you finally get to the “front” and start going fast again, you notice that there was nothing … no accident, no cop … and you never know what you were doing sitting there for that length of time. I would say that this happens almost every time I drive home. Perhaps it is an Ohio turnpike thing. It has never happened on the NYS Thruway.

7. Signage in Construction Zones
Many many kudos to Pennsylvania for the new signs in the construction zone. It is so annoying to come into a construction zone and drive for miles and miles and have no clue when you are getting out from between those narrow concrete walls. (Can you tell I have claustrophic issues here?) Well now, PA has signs that tell you before you enter the zone how long it is going to be that you will be driving bewteen the concrete walls, and then every few miles in between how many miles you have left. That, I think, is one of the nicest things I have seen in a long time. I think every state should consider doing that.

it’s a state law in both PA and new jersey that if your wipers are on, then so must your lights. it’s a good law. i, too, cannot stand the people who don’t signal. or the ones who brake first and then signal. it’s signal first, then brake people!
