How did God “create” something

Posted on Thursday 9 January 2003 by Joshua

How did God “create” something from nothing? Check out Genesis 1:2. Notice the descriptive terms: formless, empty, and dark. In the beginning, the universe was void, an invisible vaccuum. Then God set about creating the earth, utilizing his seemingly limitless supply of power and energy. But there was no matter with which to work. Where did the matter come from? Did the world just appear out of thin air? Energy just can’t be converted into matter without… Einstein said E=MC2.Energy equals mass times the speed of light squared. At the speed of light, energy can be transformed into matter. And God said first… “Let there be light.” So the question is: has the Bible held the key to E=MC2 for centuries? In Job 38:19, it says “Where is the way where light dwells?” Job is arguably the oldest book in the Bible. Yet it present us with a scientific truth that has only been realized in recent years. Light involves motion – traveling at 186,000 miles a second. It resides in a way, not a place. Then, in the first letter of John, we find another piece of the puzzle. “God is light,” John writes. “In Him there is no darkness at all.” So is God a big pool of radiant energy? Although John says, “God is light,” nowhere do we find the statement that all light is God or that God is only light. Apparently light or radiant energy is just one of God’s many characteristics. Another passage calls Jesus the light of the world. It says “through Him all things were made.” In Colossians it says, “For by Him all things were created. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” So was Jesus the creative energy, the “light” in creation? Through Him energy was transformed into matter? It’s interesting to begin to think about this kind of stuff. God is truly awesome. When I start thinking about the complexities of the universe, my spine just tingles. The evidence of something so far beyond us is just so obvious to me… For us to assume that we have the ability to imagine any of this on our own is just arrogance. A universe like this did not happen by chance. We are truly the products of an intelligence so much greater than we can fathom… and He loves me… Wow… blows me away every time.
