Good vs. Evil

Posted on Sunday 27 March 2005 by Joshua

The opposite of white is black. The opposite of happy is sad. The opposite of up is down. The opposite of God is not the devil. A statement Jerry Reeder started a message with a few months back. I was thinking about it just a minute ago. God has no opposite, was the point he was making. Thanks to George Lucas and other purveyors of eastern mystic thought, our culture [myself included] has often fallen victim to the incorrect worldview that both good and evil are equal forces in the universe. This goes along with the related thought that God and the devil are equal forces over good and evil, respectively. But the truth is that the devil, ruler of the darkness, is a created being. Thus, his power is not even a fraction as great as that of his Creator, God. This is encouraging to me because it gives hope in the fact that good will ultimately triumph over evil. Good is a greater power than evil. Hope is a greater power than despair. Love is a greater power than hate. Evil will always lose because deep down, people desire love. They yearn for hope.

People want to have hope in something better and bigger than they are. That is something that is built into each of us, no matter how hard the devil may try to convince us otherwise. He wants us to believe in rugged individualism, the triumph of human will and what we believe we can achieve all on our own. But history itself proves that this doesnt work. Humans will fail. The system breaks down. Eventually, without the intervention of something or someone bigger than humanity, chaos and destruction will result. Absolutes and morals originated from somewhere, from someone. I believe this One was God the Creator of all that is. Because I have chosen to believe this, I can rest in the assurance and understand the evidence that good and God will be the victor in the last days battle of good and evil.

I have a feeling it is going to be a pretty short battle though. As I said earlier, this is not really a fair fight a Limitless, Infinite, Uncreated, Holy and Sovereign Being against a limited, finite, created, fallen being with a high opinion of himself.

So on this day of the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus the Son of the Living God, I celebrate life. I celebrate the triumph of life over death. I celebrate the hope and the expectation of what is to come. My path is set, my future secure. Even so come Lord Jesus.
