Flipped Off

Posted on Thursday 2 March 2006Thursday 2 March 2006 by Joshua

What’s the deal with people flipping people off all the time? Are we such an impatient, angry society that we can not even afford people a couple mistakes now and then while driving? I am so amazed by the amount of people – young and old who throw up the dirty bird. Yesterday, I was pulling into a parking space, and this guy in a big truck comes flying around the corner and had to stop short as I pulled in to the space. Apparently, my action was bird worthy, because I got the angry stare down (from an older guy) with the middle finger raised. Keep in mind, this is in a parking lot. I just don’t get it. Actually, I do get it (the bird)… alot. So either I am a bad driver (impossible!) or people are just reeaaaalllly angry about little things. I am going with the latter. I think one thing I have learned in life as I have gotten older, is that we need to chill out and just relax about stuff like that. It is just not worth getting angry and upset if you get cut off in traffic, or if someone makes a stupid driving decision in front of you. We need to allow each other some grace, and start understanding that in each of these vehicles, there are people inside with things they are thinking about, and you never know what might be going on in their lives. There’s this song…it might even be a country song, that i heard once that talks about this…only I can’t figure it out right now…

EDIT – Thanks to Doug Moore at WFRN, I figured it out. It is They Don’t Understand by Sawyer Brown. Thanks Doug. Here it is.

A mother riding on a city bus
Kids are yelling kicking up a fuss
Everybody’s staring not knowing what she’s going through
Somebody said don’t you even care?
Do you let ’em do that everywhere?
She slowly turned around, looked up and stared
She said Please forgive them
But they’ve been up all night
Their father struggled but he finally lost his fight
He went to heaven
In the middle of the night
So please forgive my children

(They don’t understand)
Everybody’s busy with their own situation
Everybody’s lost in their own little world
Bottled up, hurry it up trying to make a dream come true
(They don’t understand)
Everybody’s living like there ain’t no tomorrow
Maybe we should stop and take a little time
Cause you never really know what your neighbor’s going through
(They don’t understand)

A man driving on the interstate
Slowing down traffic making everybody late
Everybody’s staring not knowing what he’s going through
Somebody hollered from the passing lane
Yelled out the window, hey ain’t got all day
The old man looked around and caught his eye
He said please forgive me
You know it’s been a long life
My wife has passed away and my kids don’t have the time
I’ve been left all alone
And its getting hard to drive
So please forgive me children

(CHORUS)

A man hanging on a wooden cross
Giving everything to save the lost
Everybody’s staring not knowing what he’s going through
Somebody said you don’t have a prayer
If you were keen you’d come down from there
The man just turned his head looked up and stared

He said please forgive them
For they have not seen the light
They’ll come to know me when I come back to life
Go to heaven, to make everything all right
So please forgive your children

(CHORUS)

A mother riding on a city bus
Kids are yelling kicking up a fuss
Everybody’s staring not knowing what she’s going through

I can honestly say I have never been given “The Bird” but I think it’s hillarious that you say you have a few times. I can’t say how I would feel if I were to get “The Bird” Maybe I would be angry or insulted. I would probably just laugh though. My humor is jacked up though. Everytime I see a picture of an old person giving the finger, I have to laugh. I’d rather someone give the finger than pull out a shotgun. Rejoice Josh!! Your driving is finger worthy!!

Oh my goodness…I just laughed so hard about the first part of this post. I can only imagine your faces and expressions and thoughts of “gracious, did that just really happen”

Thanks for the laugh that brought tears to my eyes.

Consider yourself “bird-worthy”. Yea! Josh makes people face their stuff while driving! On my vacation, I kinda forgot that in California your not supposed to make eye contact with other people in cars, else they might shoot you. So we were driving along and I’m looking around, and my was I quickly reminded why I should not make eye contact. I got the bird just for glancing over. Be glad we don’t live in Cali…

I tend to think that the reason a lot of these “birds” come out is a result of people not having the freedom to express ANGER in a healthy way. I believe the “church” is especially a fault for this bondage of the more “scary” emotions….thats it.

Of course the birds are coming out….it’s almost spring. Geesh! (haha, thought that went along with the pancake bit you told me about yesterday!) That song is great. It gave me goose bumps…man. People write some great songs!
