Waxing the 4Runner today and this little boy [about 5 yrs. old] comes walking over. This is the conversation [more or less].
Kid – watcha doin?
Joshua – waxing my truck.
Kid – why?
Joshua – well, i want to get it all shiny.
Kid – why?
Joshua – because wax protects the truck.
Kid – watcha doing now?
Joshua – now i am buffing the wax off.
Kid – butting? what’s that?
Joshua – (laughing) buffing. that means i am making it all shiny. see how over here it is not shiny and here it is.
Kid – can I do it?
Joshua – yup, just take this rag and rub it back and forth like this.
Kid – why do you call it a rag?
Joshua – ummmm… well, because it is an old shirt.
Kid – can i do that? (asking about putting the wax on)
Joshua – well, how about I keep doing this, and you keep buffing.
Kid – ok. like this?
Joshua – yup, you are doing good.
Kid – what’s this?
Joshua – that’s rust.
Kid – why?
Joshua – well the winter sometimes makes the truck get old and it starts to rust.
Kid – i like this truck, it is a nice truck.
Joshua – thanks.
It went on from there, with quite a few whys from him. I wonder if I was like that when I was that age.
