Earlier today, I had a bowl on my desk which had rice and steamed vegetables from the local Chinese place. The following conversation took place between me and Asher, the curious and highly energetic five-year-old son of my friends Matt & Nicole King.
Asher – Was that rice in your bowl?
Joshua – Yup.
Asher – Did you eat it all?
Joshua – Yeah and it was really good.
Asher – Well I used to eat rice a long time ago.
Joshua – Oh yeah? Don’t you like it anymore?
Asher – No, you see rice has a lot of sugar in it and that’s bad for you, so I stopped eating it. I want to stay all healthy.
Well, I can’t say I have heard of sugar in rice… but hey, I guess with all the stuff they put in food today, anything is possible. The funny thing is that this kid does not need any sugar. Matt and I were installing TV’s in the lobby today and Asher was there. Boundless energy that one has. Even more after he tried and finished my Strawberry Lime Jones soda. It has almost funny how fast he started talking like 15 minutes later. But he had fun riding on the forklift and even got to take a ride all the way up to the lobby ceiling (with Dad there to keep him safe). He was nervous at first about the forklift, but after I showed him that it was safe, he said, “I think I really like this thing now.” Kids really crack me up. I think it is so cool to watch how their little minds work and all the questions they ask.
First of all, I can’t believe that Asher is 5!!
Secondly, even if he didn’t get all the facts right, I think it’s awesome that he wasn’t afraid to tell you what he knew. 🙂
I love it!
If it’s white rice, it turns into sugar. Brown rice is where the nutrients are at! Because it’s not refined, it takes longer for your body to digest, whereby keeping you fuller 🙂 I just had to stop by and say that I could’ve sworn I saw you at my work last night. I only knew it wasn’t you because the man was wearing a beach-style shirt with a black panther and chinese lettering on the back of it. If not for that shirt, I probably would’ve bear-hugged him by mistaken identity.
krisit – well i say! i did not know this. i switched to brown rice over a year ago now and i think that is true now that i think about it.
just for the record, i was not in nashville last night nor do i own any beach style apparel (specifically the kind with chinese lettering and large cats on it). but it is good to know that if i were there, i would have received a hug from you 🙂
Most carbohydrates turn to sugar once digested. That’s why when you read the label content of food items the carb/sugar ratio is mostly identical. My daughter Madisen (Yes it’s pronounced “sen” not “son” shows allergic reactions to gluten and milk. So she is learning about what she can and can’t have and soon will be able to school most adults on nutrition. You know what I always say, “I believe the children are our future, I mean, you can teach them well but buddy, you’ve got to let them lead the way. Let the childrens laughter, remind us how we used to be. That’s what I decided, long ago.” 🙂
