Last night was the first Ugly Christmas Sweater celebration for our youth group. I was so impressed on how creative these guys and girls got and we had a great time doing a fashion show complete with pumpin’ club music and crazy dancing. So here are a couple photos from the night. My sweater/sweatshirt thing came as is – off the rack at Goodwill. Complete with shoulder pads and jingle bells, it staggers the imagination that at some point, someone either made this for real and thought it was really nice, or that someone must have made this as a joke. I don’t know, but it looks like an explosion in a Christmas quilt factory. Darci came to visit us from Massachusetts and joined in the fun! We went several times during the past week to many different Goodwills and Salvation Armys in the Michiana area and found so many crazy sweaters and sweatshirts. From puffy-painted, sparkley kitties singing carols, to knitted 3d fireplaces and hanging stockings, the range of tacky wear was just over the top. I don’t know what it is about Christmas that brings out the tacky in people, but it really does. It’s like, once a year, permission is granted for people to be tacky and decorate their homes with stuff that normally would never work, or wear something so ridiculous that people would normally wonder if they had taken leave of all their fashion sensibility.
But, as far as the youth event goes, next year will even be bigger and better, we hope. It’s a whole bunch of fun when everyone joins in. For more photos, check out the IGNITE website.
