Our Prayer Room is an interesting conglomeration of styles, so in an effort to make things look a little bit better, I decided to embark on building a bookcase around a very ugly and non functional fireplace. We had stuck a piece of waferboard on it for a bulletin board and, as you can see, it just was not the most attractive thing. So I got out the DeWalt chop saw and the Bostitch trim nailer and away I went. It took a me about a week to get it all together – I built it in three sections. The last section was the main part with the bulletin board on it. Instead of using cork, I opted for a sheet of steel – magnetic! A local fabrication plant was so kind to cut it for me and then donated the steel. I was pretty excited about that. So after a couple coats of paint, and the crown molding, the shelves are in use and have definitely improved the look of that space. Hopefully, my woodworking skills have improved as well. This was a fun project for me, and I have to say that I am pleased with how they turned out.
Before…yikes!
Much nicer… The light over the board adds some nice ambiance.
A mish-mash of styles & stuff in a jumble.
Much cleaner and professional. You can see the distressed steel. That took me about an hour with as wirebrush. I had never done it before and it turned out rather nicely.
Cool. I’ve always said that if I ever stopped being a designer, I would resort to the design and construction of everyday things such as this. Carpentry might be a nice fit one day.
Merry Christmas!
Wow! I have to say that with the pictures, even though I’ve seen it in person… makes it look MUCH better!!! Wait… that sounded not right… let me try again. Wow… what an amazing improvement! 🙂 I have to say I am VERY impressed with the carpentry. I thought maybe you had purchased them but then I saw you put the crown molding up… I’m impressed! From one IHOP-er to the next, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, but I kind of miss that little globe. (JK) Great job my friend, great job. (You know Shannon and I need a book shelf like that for our house)
