15 minutes out into the world…standing and ready to run!
Yesterday I had the privilege of seeing a newborn colt at our ranch. It was awesome to see that within a few minutes of his birth, he was able to stand [albeit shakily] and walk about. It did not take him long to even do a few little trots and jumps. It did take him about an hour or so to figure out how to find his mom’s milk, but when he did…look out. It was very funny to watch him before he found milk, because he was getting the sucking action on real well… just not in the right places. Another highlight was watching Collette tying up the afterbirth which was hanging out of the mom horse. It was pretty nasty. Anyway, later on, Corey was about to leave and for some reason decided to shake her hand, forgetting that her hands were crusty and bloody. Yeah, that was awesome. His face was priceless once he realized what he had just done. So all in all, it was a cool experience to witness. There are two more pregnant mares, so I am hoping to get to actually see one giving birth. I think that would be really awesome.
40 minutes out, hanging with Mom.
Josh, i was curious…have you read The DaVinci Code? If so, what are your thoughts on it?
that is a gorgeous mare!!!!! now, as much as I love horses, i will definitely pass up the opportunity to see one give birth. and just so you know, i was chewing on beef jerky when you mentioned “afterbirth”. *erp*
I would love to see it too. The only animal birth I have ever seen was a giraffe and that was wicked cool. Anyway…see you later!
