A Change Will Do You Good

Spring is here at long last. We did some raking on the grounds yesterday, since it was 65 degrees, and found all the irises, tulips and daffodils pushing their way up through the earth. Spring always seems to bring change. I don’t know why that is. Maybe it’s because life has begun again, dormant trees begin to bud, flowers begin to bloom, grass begins to turn green. And we think of change. We think of cleaning things out — opening the windows and letting the air come through the house, hosing out the garage, pulling out the grille from the shed, get the blades sharpened on the mower, bike tires aired up and make the trips to the goodwill. That room is looking dingy, time for some new paint. Those are just typical things we do. But then there are the big things – changing jobs, buying a new house, adding a family room, getting married, starting a business. That Sheryl Crow song is running around my head again… a change will do you good!

I keep looking at cars for some reason. Spring makes me itchy for something new. I don’t know why that is, but it’s true. I love cars. I really should have been a car dealer just so I could drive various cars all the time. Maybe it’s because I like change. When I had a house, I was always moving it around just for the sake of something fresh.

The questions then come to me: “How do I keep my life in God fresh? How do I change things up so I don’t feel stale or dull? What am I doing to clean out the clutter and junk in my life that’s accumulated during the winter season? How am I cleaning out the ‘piles of leaves’ so that the sunlight can reach the new shoots coming up through the ground?” I don’t always have answers because sometimes after a long winter, you find yourself in a rut and change is not especially pleasant or comfortable. It’s like when you haven’t run all winter and you get out there and stretch and you start down the street and pretty much feel like you are going to die because your muscles and lungs are not used to the exertion. (Not that I am much of a runner, but when I do I feel that!)

In the end, I want to be open to change. Don’t want to be stuck in a rut and don’t want to be a stagnant pond!

That’s a good word. Always want to stay flowing with God.
