It’s another full on media freakout about the coming storm. Yes, we are going to get snow, and yes, it is going to be windy. Should we be wise, careful and prepared? Yes, yes and yes. But oh my gosh do we have to hear another “worst blizzard since…” accompanied with dramatic theme music and wild graphics when the snow has not even begun to fall? Seriously. They get people all whipped into this frenzy before it even happens. People are out there buying bread and milk like they are going to be snowed in for a decade! Maybe it is my New York upbringing where 10-12″ was just not that significant, or the fact that snow did not slow my father down “one iota” as he would say. I vividly remember fishtailing and spinning our way to church in a rear wheel drive boat of a car because he had no intention of allowing a little bit of snow (24″) to stop him from being at church. Keep in mind we were like one of 4 people there, but by golly, we were there! I also have to keep in mind though, that our plows in upstate NY were rather imposing and these bad boys ruled the road. I remember a couple years ago, I came home for Christmas and it snowed 30″ that day. The next day not only was our driveway clear, but the roads were fine. That’s the difference, I suppose, between here and there.
I remember one of those mornings where we had about 8 inches of snow and it was still coming down hard. My mom still let me drive her and my brother and sister to school (Perth) in the family wagon. I was probably 17 at the time. Somehow I’m just not sure I’ll be ready to let my kids drive in that stuff when they are 17. But you are right- it was no big deal for us back then and there. I still have the opinion that I will never be snowed in. Even when I later lived in areas that can’t handle the snow, I refuse to have my plans changed as a result of it.
Dave – exactly! I am here at my office today (the only person in the building). The primary roads are beautiful – no problem – the Indiana plow trucks did a great job. The subdivisions and back roads are horrendous, but I have 4wd so no big deal. As for the worst blizzard since 19whatever… it was all at night, so most people just woke up to lots of snow. Again… the frenzy and fear just fell short of reality. All is well and the sun is shining.
My goodness its like that here in NH too, We welcome the mountains of snow!! 🙂 You just do what you have to do and enjoy it!!
